This spawned from the disappointment of that inevitable time when all of Jerry’s solos/jams would come to an end. I love these two tracks, and decided to download as many as I possibly could starting from 1977 when this combo was born, making a collection of discs consisting of only Scarlet-Fiya, eventually getting anxious for a single disc comprised of solos and jams continuously pressed against one another. My intention of course was to finish in 1995 (snagging the very best jams and solos from their entire career) but that plan disassembled after that lovely day when the Live Music Archive was forced to stop allowing downloads of soundboards from the Grateful Dead (cough, cough::thank you Bob Weir for stretching Jerry’s perspective on music sharing beyond his death::cough, cough). So, as you see here, a super-majority of the dates used for both tracks are in favor of 1977-78, which are the only years I was able to finish downloading in their entirety and although are two of my favorite years, I know they may not be that of everyone else. For those whom that includes, I apologize and recommend thanking Bob Weir :D. Despite that fact, I tried to incorporate some love for Dark Star Orchestra and Phil Lesh & Friends versions of the tracks (although the Fiya Mix is missing any DSO because I did that mix before the Scarlet mix and forgot). Some may wonder why the 5-8-77 Cornell show wasn’t incorporated into any of this mix whatsoever. I decided that because it is unarguably the most solid and fluid version of Scarlet-Fiya start-to-finish, it would be blasphemy to break apart any segment of that track. This is not to mention the fact that each and every piece of those two tracks on that night would have to end up on this mix somehow and that just wasn’t possible. Instead, I decided to use 4-23-77 as a sort of bookend to the entire experience, being the first and last segment of both Scarlet and Fiya. It’s a good quality soundboard recording, without many flaws, and one of my personal favorites. I know some Deadheads may believe the blasphemy is in making this mix at all considering many get upset when even set-lists aren’t played top to bottom in full. I just had to do this for myself personally and wanted to share. Hell, I would put a mad dent in my Ipod’s memory if I tried to keep the full versions of all these dates anyhow. I want to make sure to stress the fact that I am by no means any expert at this sort of thing and this has been my first attempt at such a thing. I don’t have any special programs and I’m certainly no Frank Zappa (the first to comprehend splicing together favorite solos of the same song from different nights) so I KNOW how amateur this attempt is and I only mean to remind you this for when you hear flaws in my assembly that may make you question whether its even worthy of being posted. I used an archaic and simplistic program called AudioMaestro Sound Editor which only really has the ability to cut and paste pieces of music together and nothing else. I’m a poor college student, so please forgive me for the lack of any sophisticated production elements. Also, I sought out the best quality source for each version but was unable to avoid how some of these tracks aren’t in the best audio quality which is certain to bug a lot of people. I chose my favorite Jerry sounds over how well those sounds were recorded. Many people haven’t slipped into the CD-less era yet so I knew I had to cut these tracks to 80 minutes at the most or else people wouldn’t be able to transport it, so there were a lot of my favorite Jerry sounds that I could not include. I broke each up into 4 tracks so they can be navigated a little better. Anyhow, if anyone likes this, I’ll post the Eyes of the World I’m making next so post/send me your favorite Eyes of the World dates if you’d like. Enjoy! -Justin Gargala (JamaicanWithMatches)
